Oops! Guess I skipped a couple of “How to Live on Your Own” lessons. My own mother must have skipped some too because I remember feeling the same confusion when I moved into my first apartment. Just what do I eat? The meals I remembered my mom making seemed impossibly hard

Thanks to a book I finally found called Where’s Mom Now that I Need Her (still in print because it’s a classic!), I finally learned to master … Read the rest →

I felt that way after my “up your eyeshadow game” project this fall. After immersing myself in YouTube videos to learn some techniques to enhance my increasingly hooded eyelids, I tried some of the techniques on my own eyes and was thrilled with the results. Until I took some selfies to document my new fantastic look.

All I could see in the photos were my eyebrows. Or rather, I couldn’t see my eyebrows in the photos! Years of … Read the rest →

I came across a book I’d recommend to anyone struggling with the same issue, “Self-Compassion: The Proven Power of Being Kind to Yourself” by Kristen Neff, Ph.D.

This book has given me so much insight into why I, like so many others, struggle with treating myself nicely. Our lack of self-compassion is so often tied to a desire for control: we were taught as children that we should be able to control ourselves and when something happens … Read the rest →

The kitchen counter was undeniably messy, but I took that one fact and used it to malign my entire personality. In fact, I said – out loud – something I would never, ever say, or even think, about another person.

And please guess how that made me feel? I felt worthless, incompetent, and overwhelmed. Now I’ve got to clean off the kitchen counter, but also work hard to Read the rest →

I recently decided that my word for the year 2017 is the Danish word “Hygge.” Loosely translated, hygge means “taking pleasure from the simple, cozy things in life and the company of friends.” That’s what I really need this year so I’ve spent the last few days compiling the best tips on making my life more hygge and coming up with a few of my own. If you want to bring more joy and coziness to your life, then these tips might be helpful to you as well.

Yesterday we looked ahead to our Future Selves, but today  I’d like to take one last look back at the past year. Let’s spend some time honoring our current selves and our accomplishments of the past year. After all, it’s our present self that will begin the journey to our new future self.

If you’re like me, your first instinct is to think, “Wow, I hardly did anything! I certainly didn’t accomplish one-tenth of what I hoped I would do.” But in our hearts,  I think we both know that’s not true. You … Read the rest →
